CHAPTER FIFTEEN

“Does anyone have her cell number?” Giddy said.

“Tell us what you found, son,” Hank said.

Polly walked up, a grocery store paper bag in her hand. “What’s going on?”

“Giddy says he found something,” I said.

“I can’t say. Not until Casey sees it. She’s the one Mrs. Tate hired,” he said.

Hank looked through his record book at the desk. “I have a number for her. I’m not sure it’s appropriate to give it out.”

“How about calling her yourself?” I said. “No need to violate a trust. But I’m guessing she’ll want to hear what Giddy has to say.”

Polly and Hank engaged in the silent conversation that married couples achieved after years together.

“Okay. I’ll call her. You don’t want to be more specific?” Hank asked Giddy.

“No. That will be her call.”

Rosie took the paper bag from Polly. “BRB,” she said.

We followed her as far as the living room lounge. I sat in my favorite chair. No one else took a seat. Giddy paced around in excitement.

“She’s on her way down from the ridge,” Hank said, joining us. He was okay to take a seat. “Might take her a while.”

“Is she coming down Forest Road 25? We should meet her,” Giddy said.

“She said she was,” Hank said. “But we’ve got to mind the store—”

As he spoke, the phone rang in the lobby. He got up with a grunt.

“Excuse me,” he said, wandering back.

Polly clued us in. “Ever since Robbie’s sighting and photo, we’ve been getting calls every day. Other investigators want to stay at the lodge. But we’re booked up. All except for Robbie’s room…”

I wanted to talk to the ranger anyway. At the very least, pass off the evidence Polly had accidentally uncovered.

“I’ll see what I can do about getting the room released,” I said.

“Thank you,” Polly said. “I haven’t the slightest idea what I’m supposed to do.”

Rosie came back. “I’ve stashed it in our room for the time being.”

“Good enough,” I said. “They’re probably going to want the rest of his things. Be nice if Eger kept us up to date on the investigation.”

“You going to call him?” Rosie asked.

“I’d better.” But then I watched Giddy hurry out of the lodge. “But maybe we should see what this is about first.”

Rosie nodded and we followed Giddy out the front door and onto the road. We crossed a small bridge and headed up the grade of Forest Road 25.

It didn’t take too long before I considered turning around and requesting a ride in the bus. I had already exercised enough for one day.

“Came up here on a bike,” Giddy panted. “Earlier. Maybe I should’ve rented it again.”

The thought of riding a bike up the hill sounded worse than hoofing it. Although the ride down would be fun.

We walked for about seven hundred hours before I saw a flash of motion just around a curve. “Hey,” I managed to gasp. Lifted a hand to point.

My calves were killing me and I had a stitch in my side. Sweat patted down my curls. Rosie’s, too.
